A Simple Guide to the CA Exemption Policy
Table of Contents
You studied hard. You scored 60+ in a paper. But you didn’t clear the group. Do you have to start over?
No – and that’s exactly what the exemption policy is for. ICAI allows students to carry forward high scores so they don’t have to repeat papers they have already cracked. Read on to understand how it works.
What are the exact conditions to get an exemption in CA Intermediate and Final?
- You must score 60 marks or more in a paper (Out of 100)
- You must have appeared in all papers of the group in that attempt
- You must have failed the group – exemptions don’t apply if you pass
How long is the CA Exemption valid?
|
CA Level |
Exemption Validity |
|
CA Intermediate |
3 immediately following attempt |
|
CA Final |
3 immediately following attempt |
The exemption is valid for next 3 consecutive attempts after it is earned. If you don’t clear the group within those 3 attempts, the exemption lapses and you must reappear in that paper.

Can a student opt out of an exemption?
Yes, ICAI Allows students to voluntarily surrender their exemption and reappear in the paper. This is useful when a student feels they can score higher or wants a fresh shot at the paper for confidence.
Note: Once surrendered, the exemption cannot be reclaimed. Think carefully before giving it up.
Does exemption in one group help clear the other group?
Not directly. CA Intermediate and CA Final are divided into two groups Group 1 and Group II. Exemptions are group specific – a high score in Group 1 paper doesn’t affect Group II requirements. Each group must be cleared independently.
What happens if a student passes the group but scored 60+ in one paper?
If you pass the group, exemptions become irrelevant for that group – there’s nothing to carry forward. Exemptions are only triggered when you fail the group despite scoring well in individual papers.
How does the exemption affect group passing criteria?
To pass a group, a student must:
- Score 40 Marks or more in each paper of the group
- Score an aggregate of 50% or more across all papers in that group.
When an exemption is applied, the exempted paper’s marks are not counted in the aggregate calculation – only the remaining papers determine pass/fail. This can actually make it slightly easier or harder depending on your scores, so plan accordingly.

What is the best strategy to use exemption wisely?
- Never skip a paper just because you are unprepared – you will lose the exemption for 60+ papers you say for.
- Check the aggregate impact: if an exempted paper had a very high score, removing it from aggregate can sometimes hurt you.
- Track your 3-attempt window: If the exemption is about to lapse, prioritize clearing the group.
- Use Mock tests: To identify which papers you can push to 60+ and target exemptions strategically.
Does CA exemption is automatic or have to apply?
In most cases, eligible exemptions are reflected automatically in the examination records.
Students should still verify their status while filling out the examination form.
